About the Game
What Is Tongits, and Why Do Filipinos Love It?
If you grew up in the Philippines, chances are you learned Tongits before you even finished elementary school. It is a rummy-style card game played with a standard 52-card deck, typically between two or three players. The goal is simple: be the first to empty your hand by forming valid sets and sequences, or hold the lowest point total when the draw pile runs out.
What makes Tongits special is the mix of luck and strategy. You can be dealt a terrible hand and still win if you read your opponents well, time your dumps perfectly, and know when to call a fight. It is the kind of game that rewards experience without making newcomers feel completely lost — which is exactly why it has survived generations of Filipino card players.
At PR 123, we took that same spirit and brought it online. The rules are exactly what you grew up with. The only difference is that you can now play against kabayan from Batanes to Tawi-Tawi, deposit via GCash, and withdraw your winnings straight to your Maya wallet — all without leaving your house.

How to Play Tongits on PR 123
Whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned player, here is a quick refresher on the rules we follow at PR 123.
Deal the Cards
The dealer distributes 12 cards to each player (in a 3-player game). The remaining cards form the draw pile in the center. The dealer gets one extra card for a 13-card starting hand and goes first.
Draw and Discard
On your turn, draw one card — either from the pile or the top of the discard pile — then discard one card. You can also pick up the last discarded card and use it to complete a meld, but you must lay down that meld immediately.
Form Melds
Lay down valid melds — three or more cards of the same rank (a set), or three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (a sequence). Once placed, melds stay visible on the table. You can also add cards to existing melds (called burning).
Win by Tongits or by Fight
Declare Tongits when your hand is empty — instant win. Or call a fight (challenge) after your turn: all players reveal their remaining cards and the player with the lowest unmatched card total wins. If the draw pile empties, the player with the lowest hand also wins.
Special Win – Tongits na Dalawa
On some PR 123 tables, if you go Tongits on the very first turn (dealing a natural empty hand), it pays a premium multiplier. Check the specific table rules before sitting down — the higher-stake tables tend to have the best multipliers.
Card Point Values
| Card | Face Cards (J, Q, K) | Ace | Number Cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Points | 10 pts each | 1 pt | Face value |
Lower total unmatched points = better position in a fight. Keep your unmelded cards as small as possible.

Strategy Guide
Winning Tips for Tongits Players
Tongits is not pure luck. The players who consistently win — both in tindahan sessions and on PR 123 — follow a few core principles that separate them from casual players. Here is what the experienced ones do differently.
If your opponent keeps throwing low number cards, they are likely building sequences from the higher suits. Adjust your own strategy accordingly — do not give them the card that completes their meld.
Face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10 points each. If they are not part of a meld after a few rounds, discard them early. Holding onto high-value unmatched cards is the fastest way to lose a fight.
Do not call a fight just because you feel good about your hand. On PR 123, you can only call a fight after laying down a meld on your turn. Make sure you have a genuine lead before triggering a showdown.
A card that can fit into two or three different potential melds is more valuable than one that only fits one. Patience pays — sometimes the card you need comes on the next draw.
Even the best players have bad runs. On PR 123, it is wise to set a session limit before you sit down. Step away when you hit it — tomorroow is another day, and the tables will still be there.
